Abstract

The purpose of this study is to identify students' difficulties in mastering vocabulary and to explore the factors that make students difficult to master vocabulary. This study used a qualitative research design to collect data, the researcher used interviews, observations, and documents. This research was conducted by interviewing 25 students assigned by the teacher. This means that students have the same opportunity to be selected as individual participants. The researcher conducted interviews with participants because this study aims to identify students' difficulties in mastering vocabulary. Eighth-grade students of SMPN 4 Jayapura still have difficulty mastering vocabulary. Based on the aspects of the interview, namely word pronunciation, word spelling, and word meaning. In addition, such difficulties can be caused by many factors. There are a number of internal and external factors that make it difficult for students to master vocabulary:
1) differences in spelling and pronunciation in English, (2) rarely interact in English, rarely practice, (3) differences in spelling or pronunciation of words, (4) many words with the same meaning but different meanings, (5) often mispronounced due to differences in sounds in English and Indonesian, (6) lack of family support, (7) lack of motivation to learn English and (8) the English teacher's teaching method.
