Abstract

This research investigated about the relationship between language aptitude and English learning achievement at SMA Negeri 1 Jayapura. The type of this research was a quantitative research with correlational method. There were 3 formulations of the problem (1) how is students’ language aptitude at SMA Negeri 1 Jayapura, (2) how is the students’ English learning achievement at SMA Negeri 1 Jayapura, (3) Is there any significant relationship between language aptitude and English learning achievement at SMA Negeri 1 Jayapura. The objectives of the research were to get information about the students’ language aptitude at SMA Negeri 1 Jayapura, to find out students’ English learning achievement at SMA Negeri 1 Jayapura, and to know whether there is or not a significant relationship between language aptitude and English learning achievement at SMA Negeri 1 Jayapura.
The population of this research was the second year students of eleventh-grade at SMA Negeri 1 Jayapura. There were twelve classes of the second year students which consist of 7 science classes, 1 language class, and 4 social classes. So, the number of the population was 430 students. Then, the researcher took only language class consisting 32 students as the respondents. The technique of collecting data was using specific and standardized test known as Modern Language Aptitude Test (MLAT) and documentation. The technique of data analysis used was Simple linear regression analysis by using SPSS 21 program in order to find out whether there was significant relationship between language aptitude and English learning achievement at SMA Negeri 1 Jayapura or not.
Based on data analysis, it was found that the coefficient of determination R was 0.116, or 11.6%, which means a very low relationship. In addition, the Tcount value of 1.921 is smaller than the Ttable value of 2.048, and the sig value of 0.65 is greater than 0.05. The conclusion is that the null hypothesis (Ho) is accepted and the alternative hypothesis (Ha) is rejected. In other words, there is no significant relationship between language aptitude and English learning achievement in grade 11 language students at SMA Negeri 1 Jayapura.
