Abstract
This research aims to investigate the factors of students' difficulties in speaking the English language faced by eighth-grade students of SMP YPK Kotaraja. This research uses a qualitative approach and descriptive analysis technique. The participants for observation in this research were students in grades VIII E totalling 21 people at SMP YPK Kotaraja. There were 30 students in class VIII E, but when doing observations there were students who were not present during the lesson time. To retrieve data interview researcher, ask five students for information about what difficulties they feel when speaking English during classroom interaction in EFL class at SMP YPK Kotaraja. The five students were drawn from each group, so there was one representative from each group to interview.
In collecting data, the instruments used in this study are observation sheets, recorded interviews, and video. To find out students’ difficulties in speaking English during classroom interaction in EFL class at SMP YPK Kotaraja. The researcher uses two steps to research as follows: First, the researcher identifies the data from observation, interview, and documentation. Second, the researcher makes a conclusion based on the student’s answers from the interview.
The results show that the factors that cause students' difficulties in speaking English are linguistic and social. The difficulties experienced by students when speaking in English based on observation and interview data are students’ pronunciation is lacking, lack of vocabulary, limited knowledge on the understanding of the correct grammar of English, and lack of self-confidence.
