Abstract

Motivation is the driving force for successful learning. In English learning, this can be supported by high integrative or instrumental motivation. This study concerns the learning motivation of VIII Grade E students of SMP Negeri 1 Jayapura. There are two objectives of the study. First, the study wanted to find out the level of motivation of the students in learning English. Second, it wants to find out which type of motivation is more dominant: instrumental or integrative. The study was carried out with a descriptive qualitative method using a survey method. The population of this study is all students in the class where total sampling was used. A questionnaire was distributed to the 36 students. The questionnaire consists of 20 items that are designed based on Gardner’s (1985) Attitude Motivation Test Battery (AMTB) which had been edited by Kitjaroonchai (2012) using the integrative and instrumental orientation scales. After collecting the questionnaire, it was tabulated and counted to find the mean score of each item and the total mean score either for the instrumental or the integrative motivation. Based on the analysis, the study found that all the students have high motivation in learning English. In terms of the types of motivation, the study found that the students have high integrative and instrumental motivation according to the criteria. However, integrative motivation is more dominant than instrumental motivation.
